The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka has today challenged the Bodu Bala Sena to prove that the Muslim Council has received any financial support from USA or any other.
Gnanasara
Gnanasara
Writing to BBS Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnanasara the Muslim Council said; If you have any evidence, please place them before us or produce them to the relevant authorities. It is unethical to target individual members of the Muslim Council and their families to gain media attention for your nefarious causes, which is destroying the immense respect Sri Lanka has, as a Buddhist nation.”
“You continue to make accusations against individuals and organizations, hiding yourself behind the sacred robe, which is respected by all Sri Lankans.” they said.
We publish below the statement in full;
Secretary General, Bodu Bala Sena Kirulapone
Sri Lanka
Rev. Gnanasara Thero,
I wish to bring to your attention that the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka has had no engagement or receive financial support from the Embassy of the United States or any agency affiliated to the United States of America or any other country as stated by you at the your press conference of April 22nd 2014. I wish to remind you that the Bodu Bala Sena remains charged for receiving financial support from Norway through Mr Arne Fjortoft and your Chief Executive Officer, Mr Dilanthe Withanage, which you have not denied.
The Muslim Council operates through voluntary contributions of its own members in Sri Lanka and its steering committee. I challenge you to prove that the Muslim Council has received any financial support from USA or any other. If you have any evidence, please place them before us or produce them to the relevant authorities. It is unethical to target individual members of the Muslim Council and their families to gain media attention for your nefarious causes, which is destroying the immense respect Sri Lanka has, as a Buddhist nation.
You continue to make accusations against individuals and organizations, hiding yourself behind the sacred robe, which is respected by all Sri Lankans.
The hate campaign spearheaded by you and other Buddhist priests against minority communities is contrary to the principles espoused by the noble Gautama Buddha and Buddhism.
Your continued accusations against Islam and Muslims are destroying the image of Buddhism and the peace and harmony that has existed between our communities for centuries.
As you are aware the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka represent Muslim Civil Society across the country. It is our desire to discuss and solve any issues that confront by discussion amongst us. Please feel free to contact me, should you have any queries about the Muslim Council or any other issue you may have with the Muslim community.
Yours sincerely
N M Ameen
President,
The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka

Rajapaksas Are Making Life Hell for Sri Lanka’s Muslims

Rajapaksas Are Making Life Hell for Sri Lanka’s Muslims

By : Mohammed Jehan Khan
Recent incidents of anti muslim sentiments in Sri Lanka, in defense of the Buddhism, have opened fresh wounds. The introduction of ‘Aryan Myth’ and ‘Mahavamsa Fabrications’ into Sinhala politics, which emphasizes that muslims should be subservient to Sinhalese has opened the gates of hate towards the peaceful Muslims living in this country for more than 800 years. This was the background of the famous 1915 Sinhala-Muslim riots.
Anti-Muslim actions have involved attacks on mosques, Abusing Muslims and Islam and their customs with little or no effective government and police response.
The Queestion remains, “Who’s the head of government? BBS? or the Rajapaksas? it is not a matter to wonder that these extremist organisation works under the agenda of the government. Rajapaksas who think this country belongs to them have started creating anotjer myth, “Rajapaksa Buddhism”. Rajapksas are creating an axiomatic and structural nexus between their dynastic project and the most extremist and virulent strain of Sinhala-Buddhism. Not only have they appropriated Sinhala-Buddhism for their exclusive use; they are also giving a distinct Rajapaksa flavour to it.TheRajapaksas use carrot-and-stick methods to subjugate the Sinhala Buddhist mass. In Sri Lanka, the Rajapaksa’Loyalists’ are rewarded; invertebrates tolerated; those who try to maintain even a vestige of autonomy are punished. As the Nippon incident demonstrates, they will attack not just minorities but also Buddhists who reject Rajapaksa-Buddhism. Minorities can only be condemned of treachery; Buddhists will be accused of treachery-cum-heresy.
The Rajapaksa family pretend that the country would collapse without them. All over the country, they use money, public money, hardline Buddhist monks and the power of the armed forces to oppress and repress the minority people.
The Rajapaksas’ stand above the law and disregard the constitution. The law is waiting. Justice will be done because nothing is permanent. The immutable law of the universe over which only the Almighty presides dictates that they will one day pay for their evil deeds.
Let those who have ears hear now, and those who have eyes see. Neither the Sun or the moon nor the truth can be hidden for long.

Now They Are On Muslims!

Dr. Imtiyaz Razak
Dr. Imtiyaz Razak
The recent mobilization by the Sinhala extremists against the Muslims of Sri Lanka renews the fears among Muslims. One of such mobilization is the poster campaign prior to the new year. The attached poster urges Sinhala-Buddhists to buy things ONLY from the Sinhala-Buddhist owned shops to celebrate Sinhala New Year. The poster is claimed by “We Sinhalese” previously an unknown Sinhala nationalist group.
There are two key elements in Muslim identity and mobilization in Sri Lanka. One is Islam and other is market. Since the end of the war against the Tamil Tigers who brutalized Muslims of the North and East, the Sinhala-Buddhist extremists begun to focus on Muslims whose leaders actively supported the war against the Tamil Tigers. Muslims, according to my survey for my ongoing research on Muslims, believed that they would enjoy peace and justice in the post-Tamil Tiger Sri Lanka. However what experience suggests that Muslims have become new targets of Sinhala extremists. The question is why Muslims (after the Tamils)?
The attached poster urges Sinhala-Buddhists to buy things ONLY from the Sinhala-Buddhist owned shops to celebrate Sinhala New Year. The poster is claimed by "We Sinhalese" previously an unknown Sinhala nationalist group.
The poster urges Sinhala-Buddhists to buy things ONLY from the Sinhala-Buddhist owned shops to celebrate Sinhala New Year. The poster is claimed by “We Sinhalese” previously an unknown Sinhala nationalist group.
There are no easy answers, but interesting narratives to advance the agendas. Sinhala extremists would point to increasing what they call fundamentalism among Muslims.  Actually, there is a lack of clarity about the allegations. If one would say Muslim women wearing Hijab was/is the symbol of growing Islamic fundamentalism, wearing Hijab is associated with one’s basic right. Some would point to the growth of mosques in the island. This accusation does have some merit. But one needs to remember that during the war with the Tamil Tigers, Muslims did not confront challenges from the Sinhala extremists to this effect. If Mosques were being built illegally, due process needs to be followed to address the concerns.   Muslims continuously show their loyalty to the country. Their politicians have trust in democracy and know well that Muslims cannot resort to tactics and politics advanced by the Tamils to win their rights.
On the other hand, the Muslim democratic representations need to play ‘genuine and responsible’ political roles in the national affairs. In this regard, Muslim political forces should seek policies both to calm the fears of Muslims. Also, Muslim politicians need to understand the consequences of employing symbolic religious slogans to win the votes of the Muslims who value religious identity over other traits. It is very likely too much dependency on religion to just win elections could transform the society into the stage where commitments to non-violence can be discouraged. It may be hard for political parties to freeze some easy access to power, because they formulate policies,
In Downs’s (1957: 28) language, ‘to win elections’. But bad choices of Muslim politicians more likely would trigger instability and chaos in the East among the Muslims and Tamils at the masses level.
It is very important point that the recent threats and actions by the Sinhala-extremists against the Muslims not only help marginalize Muslims, but also it provides very convenience condition for external forces, including some Tamil nationalist diasporas and their “intellectual” organs to manipulate the conditions for their own gains.
In Sri Lanka, the process of modernization produced violence and chaos rather than trust and stability. Sinhalese leaders formulated some anti-Tamil policies to attract the sympathy of the Sinhalese. The result was violent Tamil mobilization. On the other hand, Tamil polity controlled by the violent Tamil movements denied justice to the Muslims. Thousands of Muslims were expelled forcefully from Jaffna in October 1990; 300 Eastern Muslims were killed at prayer time inside their mosque in 1991 and Muslim wealth confiscated in the Jaffna, Baticolaoa and Amparai districts of the North- Eastern Province
Sri Lanka needs s to learn lesson from its past. There’s an African saying that if you don’t learn it by your own experiences, you will learn it by accident. The Sinhala-Buddhist extremists should know the fact that the actions of those against the minorities will seriously backfire.

Prophet Muhammad's Last Sermon

Prophet Muhammad's Last Sermon

Date delivered: 632 A.C.This sermon was delivered on the Ninth day of Dhul al Hijjah 10 A.H. in the 'Uranah valley of
Mount Arafat.

After praising, and thanking God, he said:"O People, listen well to my words, for I do not know whether, after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and TAKE THESE WORDS TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT BE PRESENT HERE TODAY.
O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Treat others justly so that no one would be unjust to you. Remember that you will indeed meetyour LORD, and that HE will indeed reckon your deeds. God has forbidden you to take usury (riba), therefore all riba obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital , however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer inequity. God has judged that there shall be noriba and that all the riba due to `Abbas ibn `Abd al Muttalib shall henceforth be waived.
Every right arising out of homicide in pre-Islamic days is henceforth waived and the first such right that I waive is that arising from the murder of Rabi`ah ibn al Harith ibn `Abd al Muttalib.
O Men, the Unbelievers indulge in tampering with the calendar in order to make permissible that which God forbade, and to forbid that which God has made permissible. With God the months are twelve in number. Four of them are sacred, three of these are successive and one occurs singly between the months of Jumada and Sha`ban. Beware of the devil, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.
O People, it is true that you have certain rights over your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under God's trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Treat your women well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers. It is your right and they do not make friendswith anyone of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste...
O People, listen to me in earnest, worship God (The One Creator of the Universe), perform your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your financial obligation (zakah) of your wealth. Perform Hajj if you can afford to.
All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.
Remember, one day you will appear before God (The Creator) and you will answer for your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.
O People, NO PROPHET OR MESSENGER WILL COME AFTER ME AND NO NEW FAITH WILL BE BORN. Reason well, therefore, O People, and understand words which I convey to you. I am leaving you with the Book of God (the QUR'AN*) and my SUNNAH (the life styleand the behavioral mode of the Prophet), if you follow them you will never go astray.
All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness O God, that I have conveyed your message to your people.
“…This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My Grace upon you, and have chosen Islam for you as your religion…” (Quran 5:3)

An Unholy Alliance Of Buddhist Terrorists

Tariq A. Al-Maeena
Tariq A. Al-Maeena
Siddhartha Gautama, who became universally known as the sage Buddha, was born some 2,500 years ago in Nepal. He was a human being who became acutely enlightened in understanding life and explaining it in its simplicity. It is said that he once sat under a peepal tree for 40 days and nights to attain understanding and enlightenment and once he reached that stage he felt free from greed, hatred and ignorance, and enhanced by wisdom, compassion, tolerance and freedom. This was the message he sought to promote for the remaining years of his life to his disciples.
Unfortunately over the centuries, some of Buddha’s followers or Buddhists as they are called mutated into something far removed from the sage’s messages. Theirs has become a calling of all things evil and violent. Currently there are two such strains of Buddhists who are leading a campaign against others that is devoid of any of the sage’s messages.
One group, the Ahsin Wirathu Alliance, operating out of Burma or Myanmar, is made up of bloodthirsty Buddhists who have been terrorizing and slaughtering thousands of Myanmar’s minority Rohingya Muslims. Even Aung San Suu Kyi, a leader of the Myanmar opposition and the 1991winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, dares not venture to align herself with the cause of the displaced Rohingyas for political considerations. She has thus far been protected from any criticism for the massacres going on in her country even though some question whether she is supporting the terrorist Buddhist group which is attempting to exterminate the Muslim population in Myanmar.
Gnanasara and WirathuAnother equally vicious Buddhist group in Sri Lanka, the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), has lately begun a fierce campaign against the Tamil, Muslim and Christian minorities on the island.
Last month, events in Sri Lanka took an even more disturbing turn. Ashin Wirathu Thera, leader of the 969 Movement in Myanmar, and notorious for his anti-Islam tirades which have resulted in the slaughter of thousands of Rohingya refugees was invited by his BBS counterparts in Sri Lanka to visit the island. Time magazine has correctly described Wirathu as the “Face of Buddhist Terror”.
The meeting of two terrorist Buddhist group leaders from Myanmar and Sri Lanka does not bode well for the minorities of the island of Sri Lanka. In Myanmar, the minorities have already been subjugated to the point of being completely wiped out in some areas by acts of maximum brutality. Such acts have been muted so far in Sri Lanka, but such an unholy alliance could well spell disaster for their adversaries.
When the UN’s top human rights body launched an investigation recently into Sri Lanka’s civil war and possible war crimes against the Tamil minorities based on the recommendation of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, the Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary screamed at a press conference: “We will skin the bitch alive!” This is the same individual who flew to Burma to receive a special birthday gift from Burma’s radical monk Wirathu last month.
The mindset of this terrorist group has increasingly worried many Sinhalese who make up the majority of the population in Sri Lanka and it has greatly disturbed the many minorities who have lately witnessed an increasing number of unabashed and defiant acts against their people, places of worship and businesses. This was not Buddha’s message.
With this unholy alliance between the two terror groups in the offing, the island’s minorities are wondering if it will eventually lead to the same sort of assault and slaughter of their people as the Rohingya have faced in Myanmar. This will unquestionably lead Sri Lanka to the precipice of disaster.

Masahalla

bodu bala sena in slave island police-බොදු බල සේනා කොම්පඤ්ඤ වීදිය පොලිසි...

Making a statement to the Media in the premises of the Slave Island Police, a priviledge that has not been afforded to many, BBS General Secretary, Buddhist Monk Galagoda aththe Gnanasara while calling for the intervention of the Defense Forces to “defeat Muslim and minority extremism” slammed Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa for providing patronage to “Muslim colonisation’”.

“I will tell you all that it is Basil Rajapaksa who is behind this. He is the one who is permitting Bathiudeen to dance to any tune. He is the one who is giving the encouragement and support to Bathiudeen to settle these Muslims in Wilpaththu. I’m not afraid to say this” he said.
Minister Basil Rajapaksa is viewed as a Political foe of the powerful Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The priviledge afford to Gnanasara was not given to any other politician in recent past. It comes as no surprise as it was the Slave Island Police personnel who were present during the abuse and disruption of the Press Conference held at the Nippon Hotel which was the subject matter of the complaint.
Making a lengthy statement to the media, Gnanasara lashed out at several other Ministers and said that he looks forward to meeting Minister Rishad Bathiudeen in court.
Earlier Bathiudeen sent a letter of demand to Gnansara alleging that the statements he had made to the press regarding the re- settlement in Wilpaththu was false and defamatory.
Speaking further Gnanasara challenged any Minister including the JVP to a debate at any public forum.
“I’m willing to debate that Napunsakaya( Neutor) Dilan PereraWimal,VasudewaHakeem and Rishad together with the JVP at any forum they want. I will come alone and debate them to prove these facts” he said while reiterating that a stretch of land from Puththalam to Silavathura was to be colonised by Muslims.
Gnanasara also said that Sri Lanka has a ‘ Muslim nikaya’ and a Catholic ‘ Nikaya’ (* sect) which has bought over monks for propoganda.
Mohomed Watareka is one of them. It is this man who is being used as a cats paw for these sects” he said.
Making inciting, malicious and false remarks during the said address made within the Premises of the Police station, Gnanasara said that Muslims were working according to a concept ” from the Kuran called Al- Thakkiya”.
” This is to take over land and other things by using crafty, devious and capricious methods. That is what they are doing and this is what the Kuran has instructed these extremist to do ” he said providing no substantiation to the claims.
The Monk also said that they have created over a hundred people who could take on their fight in the event they are slain.
” There are two ways to attack us, one is to defame us and damage our characters. The other is to murder us. If we are murdered we have nothing to worry because there are hundreds of people who will take our fight with more venom” he said.
Earlier Gnansara was charged with Drunk Driving and was alleged to have received foreign funding from Norway and others, claims that have not been denied yet.

JVP Condemns Inaction Of Police, Says Clear Indication Of State Sponsoring The BBS

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna ( JVP) in a statement issued to the media said that the fact that the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) could threaten and disrupt yesterdays media conference in the presence of the Police was a clear indication that the organisation actions are state sponsored.
The fact that the BBS could do all this in the very presence of the Police clearly shows that their actions are state sponsored. The government should immediately take action to prevent incidents of this sort which are a threat to democracy and national unity from occuring” the statement said.
The strongly worded statement which denounced the actions of the ( BBS) said that the abuse and threats hurled at the monks of the Jathika Bala Sena poses a serious threat to the status of the rule of law.
Earlier the convener of the Jathika Bala Sena Ven.Watareka Vijhitha Thero was abused and forced into apologising and disbanding his organisation.
However, the thero thereafter lodging a complaint said that he feared for his life and made the apology under coercion.
Ven. Vijitha was ealier assaulted allegedly by the BBS and was hospitalised due to his vociferous criticism of the organisation.

Buddhism, Sinhala-Buddhism And Rajapaksa-Buddhism

“Do not use the (Buddhist) robes to talk about the problems of Muslim people…. This Monk-hood cannot be given to Muslims….” - Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thero (Disrupting a press conference by Buddhist monks and Muslim cleric s- Nippon Hotel, Colombo – 9.4.2014)[i]
Ven. Ranthiligama Ratnajothi Thero passed away last month.
When he died, the government did not declare national mourning and the nation did not wallow in an orgy of grief. There was no media frenzy or a public competition to claim his legacy. Such veneration is reserved for the likes of Ven. Gangodawila Soma Thero who preached his own anti-dhamma of bigotry and venom.
Ven. Ratnajothi Thero took the antithetical path. He did not make a name and a living out of inciting fare and hate. Instead he spent his energies on creating an oasis of harmonious coexistence in an increasingly turbulent sea of ethno-religious fanaticism. Like his Master, he seemed to have preached non-violence and loving-kindness towards all.
According to an obituary by Dr. Rifai, “He has been an architect of Muslim and Singhalese friendship association in Hemmathagama. He has been working hard to bridge the gaps between Muslims and Singhalese people….always calling people to live in peace and communal harmony. It has been his dream to build up a strong communal and social relationship between Muslim and Singhalese communities in the area. He loved to see people living in peace and harmony…. Since unfortunate incident in Mawanella in 2001 he has been working hard among Buddhist people of the area to build communal harmony among Muslims and Sinhalese.”[ii]
Ven. Ratnajothi Thero’s funeral reflected his life. Muslims joined Buddhists in mourning his death. Muslims carried his coffin to the cremation place. Hemmanthegama Mosque Federation provided lunch to the mourners.
“Hemmathagama people have lost one of noble and venerable monks and a friend of Muslim people in our area,”[iii] lamented Mr Azhar, principal of Kotegoda School and member of Buddhist-Muslim association in Hemmathagama.
When Gangodawila Soma Thero fell victim to the Russian Winter and the manic fringe screamed murder (by conspiratorial-Christians, the main enemy of that time), the political mainstream opted for opportunistic silence. When the JHU raised its ugly head, the mainstream parties, instead of taking a principled stand against its toxic-politics, sought to benefit from it.
Lankan political establishment never stood foursquare against the scourge of Sinhala-Buddhist fanaticism.
The Rajapaksas are not making tactical use of Sinhala-Buddhist fanaticism as all Lankan parties (from right to left) did. They are creating an axiomatic and structural nexus between their dynastic project and the most extremist and virulent strain of Sinhala-Buddhism. Not only have they appropriated Sinhala-Buddhism for their exclusive use; they are also giving a distinct Rajapaksa flavour to it.
A suitable analogy is the mutually sustaining relationship between the Al-Sauds and arguably the most fanatical and primitive Islamic sub-sect – Wahabism.
The Al-Sauds of Sri Lanka
Buddhism is not a ‘religion of the book’. Sinhala-Buddhism is. Its ‘holy book’ is the Mahawamsa. The Mahawamsa misshaped the teachings of the Buddha into a martial faith – a potent governance-tool for Lanka’s kings. Anagarika Dharmapala transformed Mahawamsa-Buddhism into modern Sinhala-Buddhism, a politically and socially retrogressive creed which equates anti-imperialism and patriotism with abiding hatred of minorities and the rejection of Enlightenment values.
Rajapaksa-Buddhism marks a new low-point, in this abysmal trajectory. It seeks to create a new conflation, connecting the Buddha, Buddhism, Sinhalese and the Rajapaksas. The first exposition of this fusion-creed was made at a reality-show for the military, ‘Ranaviru Real Star’. At the tightly choreographed gala, and in the presence of the President and other Rajapaksas, Jackson Anthony, actor turned Rajapaksa-ideologue, created a new genealogy for the Ruling Family. According to this marvellously creative genealogical table, the Rajapaksas are direct descendents of Dutugemunu – the Hero-king of Sinhala-Buddhism – and the Family of King Suddhodana, the Buddha’s father.
“Today we watched the Ten Great Warriors[iv] bringing a message from King Gemunu to the current President Mahinda Rajapaksa. I felt that this was very meaningful for two reasons…. If Prince Gemunu wants to send a letter to a modern head-of-state, the most suitable amongst our post-independence leaders is the current Commander-in-Chief. Secondly Prince Gemunu has a genealogical right to send a felicitation-message to a Rajapaksa… requesting him to protect this freedom for the future… Of the 219 rulers of this country only 6 waged war to create a unitary state….King Gemunu, King Walagamba, King Datusena, King Vijayaba the Great, King Parakramabahu VI. After King Prakramabahu the only hero who united the country was Right Honourable Mahinda Rajapaksa. (Mr. Anthony did not mention George III of Great Britain and Governor Brownrigg; naturally.) … Prince Gemunu argued with his uncle that the kingship of this country belonged to him because he was a descendent of the Suddodana family, the family of Lord Buddha’s father. King Suddodana’s brother was Amithodana; Amithodana’s child was Pandushakya; Pandushakya’s daughter was Badrakachchayana; she came to Lanka to marry King Panduwasdev. Her daughter Unmada Chitra’s son was Pandukabhaya; his son was Mutasiva; his son was Devanampiyatissa; his brother was Mahanaga; Mahanaga ran away to Ruhuna and built Magampattuwa; his brother was Yatalatissa; Yatalatissa’s brother was Gotabhaya… King Gotabhaya’s son was Kawantissa; his son was Gemunu. Gemunu takes this genealogical legacy to Giruwapattuwa…. Today a Rajapaksa of Giruwapattuwa received a message from his ancestor Prince Gemunu, through the Ten Great Warriors, asking him to protect the freedom of the unitary country for the future.” [v]
This made-to-order history can be crunched into an Aristotelian syllogism:
The descendents of the Suddhodana Family are the rightful rulers of Lanka.
The Rajapaksas descend from the Suddhodana Family.
The Rajapaksas are the rightful rulers of Lanka.
Reason and intelligence can sometimes be blind to the power of ignorance. Mr. Anothony’s history is errant nonsense; it even contradicts the Mahawamsa[vi]. But it should not be dismissed as drivel because this drivel is being sprouted by a leading ideologue of the Ruling Family.
The Mahawamsa’s three precepts are Consecrated Island, Chosen Race and Sinless War; the Rajapaksa ideologues are seeking to add a fourth precept – Rightful Dynasty. Until 1815, the two necessary preconditions for Lankan kingship were royalty and Buddhism. That was how Nissankamalla, a scion of India’s Kalinga Dynasty, reigned in Pollonnaruwa and Nayakkara kings ruled the Kandyan Kingdom from 1739 (including Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe who re-established Higher Ordination).
Historically a kinship with Family Suddodana was never a condition for Lankan kingship. The purpose of this Rajapaksa addition is to use the Buddha to legitimise Rajapaksa rule, for eternity.
The BBS et al are the Rajapaksas’ Mutaween, responsible for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, a la Rajapaksa-Buddhism. As the Nippon incident demonstrates, they will attack not just minorities but also Buddhists who reject Rajapaksa-Buddhism. Minorities can only be condemned of treachery; Buddhists will be accused of treachery-cum-heresy.
This fractured and warring Rajapaksa-future is still not an inevitable fate. There is another Sri Lanka which is possible, as Ven. Ratnajothi Thero’s life and death demonstrate. It is a future worth struggling for – because the alternative is an abject and a torn country at the (non-existent) mercy of the likes of the BBS and its Christian, Muslim and Hindu counterparts.

[ii]http://mawanellanews.com/the-chief-monk-of-hemmathagama-ven-ranthiligma-ratnajothi-thero-passed-away/. I am extremely grateful to Dr. Rifai and Mr. Latheef Farook for making me aware of the life and death of this truly Buddhist priest, through their articles.
[iii] Ibid
[iv] According to the Mahawamsa, King Dutugemunu’s army was led by the Dasa Maha Yodayas, meaning ten great warrior generals possessing superhuman strength and martial ability.
[vi] According to the Mahawamsa, Prince Gemunu fled to Malaya (the central hills), after he fell out with his father; the Chronicle makes no mention of Giruvapattuwa.
